Cameroonian soccer fans are known for their unwavering pride in their national team, often referred to as "The Indomitable Lions." However, after a string of losses and the retirement of some key players, the team's glory days started feeling distant, and many fans like myself lost their once-fiery enthusiasm. So, when I was approached to design a digital experience for the team, I saw it as a way to reconnect myself and many other fans with those old days we used to celebrate in family the victories of our Indomitable Lions and reignite our flame.

A mobile app that makes it easy to check the status of the team, their news and matches, while allowing the Federation to generate more revenues at a low cost by selling their accessories and promoting their partners.

I researched several popular soccer club apps (PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern, Inter Milan) to identify what had been successful in keeping fans engaged. From my findings, I noticed that many of these apps share information through simple articles and maintain user engagement with short videos of the team.

When I spoke with the federation, I learned they weren’t looking for a high-maintenance solution. They wanted a platform that didn’t require a lot of support. Knowing this allowed me to start brainstorming ways to make the platform efficient and low-touch.

With pen and paper, I sketched layout concepts to combine match updates, news, and promotions seamlessly. Initially aiming for an innovative experience, a brainstorming session with a friend developer confirmed the technical challenge of providing reliable data affordably. This led us to explore low-cost APIs, balancing user experience with functionality.

Testing also showed a lack of excitement around the initial layout, which didn’t highlight the merchandise and ticketing options as effectively as users would have liked.

With a shift in article sources and the need to reduce visual noise, an action bar was introduced. Additionally, given our end users span ages, prioritizing accessibility was essential. We added options for adjusting text size and contrast, allowing users to tailor the experience to their needs anytime.

In the final round of user testing, I saw fans react positively. The revised layout created a palpable sense of excitement, and several users even inquired about the app’s release date, eager to use it for live updates and merch purchases. The addition of curated collections and easy access to legendary game replays left fans delighted and engaged.

Ultimately, while the app didn’t go live due to some complications between the federation and the technical team, this project was a powerful reminder of the importance of user insights and adaptability. Seeing users light up with excitement during testing made the experience immensely rewarding. Watching fans reignite their passion for their team—even if just within the test phase—reinforced why I love this work.
